Anything that decreases the quality of a radiograph, and makes for difficult diagnosis from radiograph
What is an artifact?
Due to static electricity exposing film
What causes the Black Tree artifacts?

Film exposed to light in film box or film safe
What is the causes of black edges along one edge of the film?
Cassette damaged, allowing light to leak in
What is the cause for black border on multiple sides of the film?
Foreign material in/on image receptor, Contrast media on patient, table, or cassette, upside down cassette
What are the causes of white areas for digital and film?
FFD/SID not set correctly for grid use
What is the cause for grid lines on entire image?
Grid not centered with primary beam (Grid cutoff)
What is the cause for grid lines on one end of image?
Grid not perpendicular to central x-ray of primary beam
What is the cause for grid lines on entire image?
Excessive scatter radiation, film exposed to x-ray radiation during storage, film stored in area too hot/humid, film exposed to light leak in darkroom
What are the causes for film fog?
Increase OFD, Decrease FFD, Large filament/focal spot
What are the three things that cause penumbra?
kVp and/or mAs too high
What is the reason for the image being overexposed?
mAs and/or kVp too low
What is the reason for the image being underexposed?
Patient motion, penumbra effect
What is the reason for loss of detail?
