Transport System
The different means in a country used to carry people and materials from one place to another.
Expressway
Multi-lane, well-paved highways with controlled access and a wide divider, designed for smooth movement and speeds restricted to 120km/hr.
National Highways
Long metalled roads that link far-away places across many states, maintained by the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).
Golden Quadrilateral
A 5,846 km highway network project connecting the four major metropolitan cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata.
Railway Gauge
The technical term for the distance between the two tracks on any railway route.
Broad Gauge
A railway track width of 1.676m, accounting for about 50% of the total route length in India.
Metre Gauge
A railway track width of 1m, primarily used in northern UP, Bihar, Assam, and parts of western India.
Narrow Gauge
A railway track width of 0.762m, typically used in mountainous regions like Kalka-Shimla.
Vande Bharat Express
Also known as Train 18, it is the fastest train in India, reaching speeds of 180km/h between Delhi and Varanasi.
Metro Rail System
A rapid mode of pollution-free and eco-friendly transportation suited for mega cities, first started in Kolkata in 1984.
Airports Authority of India (AAI)
The agency formed on April 1, 1995, to manage the integration and modernization of terminal and cargo facilities at Indian airports.
Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd.
A company providing helicopter support services to the petroleum sector, public undertakings, and North-Eastern states.
Greenfield Airport
A new airport project developed from scratch, such as the one in Cochin, Kerala, built with NRI contributions and loans.
Inland Waterways
Navigable rivers, canals, backwaters, and creeks used for the movement of goods and passengers within the country.
National Waterway 1
The longest national waterway in India, stretching 1620km on the Ganga river from Allahabad to Haldia.
National Waterways Act, 2016
The legislation under which the Government of India promotes and regulates inland water transport.
Coastal Waterways
Navigation routes running parallel to the coastline that connect major and minor ports along the sea coast.
Sagarmala Project
A government initiative aimed at port-led development, including modernizing ports and integrating coastal shipping.
UDAN
A regional airport development program whose name stands for 'Ude Desh ka Aam Naagri'.
Border Roads Organisation (BRO)
An agency that develops and maintains road networks in India's border areas and friendly neighboring countries for strategic needs.
Atal Tunnel
A highway tunnel built under the Rohtang Pass in the eastern Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas on National Highway 3.
NSEW Corridor
The largest highway project in India, connecting Srinagar to Kanyakumari (North-South) and Silchar to Porbandar (East-West).
Maglev Technology
Magnetic levitation technology researched for trains to achieve exceptionally high speeds and smoother rides.
