Poverty
Lack of education and employment can make people vulnerable to extremist propaganda, especially if terrorist groups offer employment and economic stability for those who support them
In the Sahel Region, extreme poverty contributes to terrorism, for example 51% of worldwide terrorism takes place in the Sahel Region
Unemployment
Unemployment causes people to feel excluded from society, and terrorist groups use this to their advantage by offering jobs which provide a sense of belonging
For example, high unemployment in Nigeria has contributed to the rise of Boko Haram, as young people with few job opportunities are more easily recruited into the group
Lack of development
When a country is underdeveloped it is easy for corruption to happen within the government. People may see a terrorist group as the only ones who can solve the development problem in their country.
In Afghanistan, underdevelopment in rural areas has contributed to terrorism, as poor infrastructure, limited education, and lack of basic services make communities more susceptible to Taliban influence
