Sex Drive
Psychologist thinks that sex drive peaks during the teens and early twenties (Hyde, 1982).
It declines as we age.
Primary Sex
physical characteristics present at birth that distinguishes male and female
Females: vagina, uterus, and ovaries
Males: penis, testes or testicles, scrotum, and prostate gland
Secondary Sex
develop during the onset of puberty.
Females: enlargement of the breasts and buttocks, the onset of menstruation, growth of pubic hair
Males: testicular growth, sperm production, the appearance of facial, pubic, and other body hair, and deepening of voice
Sexuality
What makes us human is our ____. It is an innate function to survive through reproduction.
Sex
is beyond merely the act of procreation but answers to both psychological and spiritual needs.
Attraction
is usually influenced by social norms, physical attractiveness, and processes of interpersonal exchange.
Social Exchange Theory
Attraction is a result of an exchange process. People tend to view relationships as a result of the rewards and costs they entail.
Romantic Love
Includes a complex combination of different emotions such as fear, anger, sexual desire, joy, and jealousy. Some of these emotions may also be a source of suffering (Santrock, 2002).
Intimacy
refers to feelings of closeness, connectednes and bondedness.
Passion
refers to the drives that lead to romance, physical attraction, and sexual consummation.
Commitment
refers to the decision to love and the commitment to maintain that love.
Sexual Response
It refers to the order of physical and emotional changes that arise as a person becomes sexually aroused and partakes in sexually exciting activities, including intercourse (coitus) and masturbation.
Sexual Orientation
refers to a person's sexual identity anchored on what gender they are attracted to.
Heterosexuality
most common sexual orientation in which one is sexually attracted to members of the opposite sex.
Homosexuality
the orientation of one who is sexually attracted to the same sex. Gays, Lesbians.
Lesbian
Type of Sexual Orientation
A woman who is primarily attracted to women.
Gay
Type of Sexual Orientation
a man who is primarily attracted to men; sometimes a broad term for individuals primarily attracted to same-sex.
Bisexual

An individual attracted to people of their own and the opposite gender
Transgender

A person whose gender identity differs from their assigned sex at birth.
Transexual

An outdated term that originated in the medica and psychological communities for people who have permanently changed their gender identity through surgery and hormones.
Queer

An umbrella term to be more inclusive of the many identities and variations that make-upthe LGBTQ + community.
Intersex

An individual whose sexual anatomy or chromosomes do not fit with the traditional markers of
"female" and "male"
Same-sex Attraction
Homosexual behavior is likely to present in all societies and cultures and has been documented on all six settled continents.
Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)
are contacted primarily through sexual contact (vaginal, oral, or anal sex).
Affect the sex organs; life-threatening.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
is a virus that attacks the body's immune system. If this is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome).
Gonorrhea
caused by gonococcal bacteria which attack the lining of the mucous membrane such as the mouth, throat, vagina, and urethra.
Can be treated with penicillin or other antibiotics.
Syphilis
infects the genital areas and other parts of the body including the brain and can cause paralysis or even death when left untreated.
Chlamydia
caused by the bacterium chlamydia trachomatis
Men: swollen testicles, and a burning sensation during urination.
Women: sterility, damages the uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tube.
Genital Herpes
can cause itching and tingling sensations, abscesses, and blisters in the genital area.
There is no cure for herpes.
Genital Warts
caused by human papillomavirus which makes women prone to cervical cancer.
Though warts may be removed, they may recur.
Contraception
refers to methods used to prevent pregnancy.
