Intro - Definition
Marriage is for the continual growth in love of the husband and wife. Through the grace of the sacrament, the couple experiences this growth in mutual love and unity.
Evidence - Genesis 2:24
Genesis 2:24 declares that, “the two become one flesh,” describing the deeper, spiritual, emotional and physical unity established with marriage.
Explanation - Genesis 2:24
Likewise, Genesis exemplifies how marriage requires personal vulnerability, allowing a partner to provide support that transcends romantic affection. As a result, marriage establishes an empathetic relationship between spouses that reflects a “measure of true love.”
Example - CCC 1644
Likewise, the Catechism of the Catholic Church states in article 1644, that couples “are called to grow continually in their communion through day-to-day fidelity to their marriage promise of total mutual self-giving.” expressing how marriage is unitive through intertwined exclusivity and a shared life-long commitment.
Explanation - CCC 1644
This demonstrates that marriage unites spouses through faithful self-giving involving every aspect of their personhood. Therefore, Catholic marriage is not simply a legal covenant, but a lifelong commitment to fidelity and unity.
