QU First interrogation (theme of censorship/loyalty)
One moment in which Katurian’s (essay question) can be found is at the start of the interrogation when the detectives, Tupolski and Ariel, are informing him about recent child murders that have been executed similarly to the child killings in the stories. Katurian is clueless because he doesn’t understand why this is a problem, therefore trying to defend himself.
“Are you trying to say I shouldn’t write stories with child killings in, because in the real world there are child killings?”
QU Confession parents (theme of moral ambiguity)
Another moment in which Katurian’s rebellion can be found is at the end of the play when he emphasises that he killed his own parents. This happens when Ariel understands that Katurian did not actually kill the children, but it was his brother, Michal, that killed them. Ariel understands this as Katurian gives wrong information about the children, therefore raising suspicions on whether or not he has actually committed the crimes. Ariel gets to the point where he thinks that Katurian was not even the person that killed his parents, but in that case, he is telling the truth
“I killed my parents”
QU Anti political speech (theme of storytelling)
Another moment in which Katurian’s rebellion is shown is at the start of the play when Katurian condemns the rise in popularity of written pieces that have a political nature, emphasising the fact that someone who writes should purely tell a story and that he would never include political, social, economic elements in any of his creations.
“I mean, I agree, you read these stories supposedly…”
AC First interrogation
If I were to play Katurian in this moment, I would be sitting down with my legs crossed, I would use facial expressions showing concern, an upright posture, and a relaxed body language. Additionally, I would emphasise the question, use a confused, but angry tone, a shaky fluency, and a quiet volume
AC Confession parents
If I were to play Katurian in this moment, I would be sitting down, I would use facial expressions showing anger, having my head down, and a scared body language. Additionally, I would emphasise the “I”, use a devasted tone, a clear clarity, and a loud volume
AC Anti political speech
If I were to play Katurian in this moment, I would be standing up, pacing with a steady gait, holding an upright posture. Additionally, I would emphasise the swearing words, use an angry tone, a clear clarity, and a loud volume
