Beaker
A laboratory container labeled KIMAX NO. 14000 (available in 200ml and 250ml sizes) used to hold solids or liquids that will not release gases when reacted or are unlikely to splatter if stirred or heated.
Erlenmeyer Flask
Used to hold solids or liquids that may release gases during a reaction or that are likely to splatter if stirred or heated.
Florence Flask
Rarely used in first year chemistry, this flask is used for mixing chemicals; it features a narrow neck to prevent splash exposure.
Graduated Cylinder
A piece of laboratory equipment used to measure volumes of liquids.
Gas Collecting Bottle
Used when large volumes of gases are produced and must be collected by the displacement of water.
Test Tube Holder
Used for holding a test tube that is too hot to handle.
Test Tube Brushes
Tools used to clean test tubes and graduated cylinders; caution is advised as forcing a large brush into a small test tube will often break the tube.
Test Tube Racks
Used for holding and organizing test tubes on the laboratory counter; plastic versions may melt if they come into contact with very hot test tubes.
Rubber Stoppers
Used to close containers to avoid spillage or contamination; containers should never be heated when these are in place.
Spot Plates
Equipment used to perform many small scale reactions at one time.
Watch Glass
A piece of glassware used to hold a small amount of solid, such as the product of a reaction.
