Brønsted-Lowry Acids
a compound that donates a proton to another compound
Brønsted-Lowry Base
a compound that accepts a proton.
-an acid-base reaction is the transfer of a proton from a doner (acid) to an acceptor (base)
Conjugate base
The species that remains after an acid donates H(+), because it reacts as a proton acceptor in the reverse reaction.
Conjugate acid
when a base accepts H(+)
Acid Ionization
the reaction between a Brønsted-Lowry Acids and water
Base Ionization
occurs when it accepts protons from water molecules
Amphiprotic (amphoteric)
Species capable of either donating or accepting protons. This may be used for acids or bases.
Autoionization
the process in which like molecules react to yield ions
