Beatitudes
Specific blessings detailed by Jesus during the Sermon on the Mount that guide followers of Christ in living for God.
Blessed are the poor in spirit
A statement from the first Beatitude suggesting that humility and recognizing one's need for God leads to belonging in the kingdom of heaven.
Humility
A characteristic of being humble or 'poor in spirit' that allows individuals to honor God and understand their place in His kingdom.
Godly grief
A type of mourning over sin that leads to repentance and God's forgiveness, as mentioned by Paul in 2 Corinthians 7:9-10.
Meekness
Being quiet, gentle, and submissive; a combination of humility and obedience to God, as taught in the third Beatitude.
Righteousness
Moral responsibility and pursuit of justice, highlighted in the fourth Beatitude where those who hunger and thirst for righteousness are promised satisfaction.
Mercy
Compassion or forgiveness shown towards others, as emphasized in the fifth Beatitude, where those who are merciful will receive mercy.
Pure in heart
Living with a sincere, selfless love for God and others; necessary for seeing God, as highlighted in the sixth Beatitude.
Peacemakers
People who pursue peace, especially among conflict, and are called 'sons of God' for their efforts, as stated in the seventh Beatitude.
Persecution for righteousness' sake
Suffering for doing good and living in accordance with God's will; Jesus affirms that those who are persecuted for this reason are blessed.
