when are ordinal measures of association used?
with 2 ordinal scale or one ordinal and one interval/ratio
the values of both variables must be: in order from low to high or high to low, must be ordered in the same direction, and the value will say about relationship and the sign will say about direction
what is gamma?
a pre measure and is a liberal measure
how to calculate NS and ND?
for NS: begin in the upper left hand corner, multiply that value in the cell by the sum of everything below and to the right of it and continue
for ND: start at the upper right-hand corner, and multiply that value in the cell by the sum of everything below and to the left of it and continue
what is somer’s d?
asymmetrical, not PRE and is the conservative measure
what is ty?
to calculate it: start in the upper left corner and multiply it by everything to the side of it and keep going down
what is spearman’s rho?
it’s used with data in a frequency distribution and not a table and the more closely ratings in one are associated with ratings in the other, the stronger the association
BUT rs2 is a PRE measure so take the answer and square it and multiply it by 100
what are the steps of spearman’s rho?
1) rank the scores on the first variable from highest to lowest (if both have the same score find average and use that as the ranking for both)
2) rank the scores on the second variable from highest to lowest (average ties as before)
3) find the difference between them (subtract step 2 from step 1)
4) square the differences and add them up
5) use the formula
do the same kinda table way as chi
how is the finding worded?
as the ranking for x increases so does the ranking for y and use the PRE finding the same way
