Goal of anesthesia
Create a controlled reversible state that allows medical procedures to be done safely and comfortably
The actual goals of anesthesia listed
Analgesia, amnesia, unconsciousness, muscle relaxation, and reflex suppression
Propofol indications
Induction of general anesthesia and maintaining balanced anesthesia when used with other agents
Action of propofol
Produces short acting hypnosis and amnesia
Propofol contraindications
Hypersensitivity to propofol, soybean oil, egg lecithin or glycerol
Propofol side effects
Bradycardia, hypotension, burning, pain, stinging, APNEA, INFUSION SYNDROME
Ketamine indications
Induction and maintenance of general anesthesia
Ketamine action
Blocks afferent impulses of pain perception. Suppresses spinal cord activity and affects CNS transmitter system systems.
Ketamine contraindications
Hyper sensitivity, psychiatric disturbances, uncontrolled hypertension, increased into cranial pressure
Ketamine side effects
Hypertension, tachycardia, emergence reactions
Vecuronium indications
Induction of skeletal muscle paralysis and facilitation of intubation after induction of anesthesia in surgical procedures. Facilitation of compliance during mechanical ventilation.
Vecuronium actions
Prevents neuromuscular transmission by blocking the effect of acetylcholine at the myoneural junction
Vecuronium contraindications
Hyper sensitivity and hyper sensitivity to bromides
Vecuronium side effects
Rash, bronchospasm, and ALLERGIC REACTIONS, INCLUDING ANAPHYLAXIS
Isoflurane uses
Inhaled volatile general anesthetic, also called Forane. Used for induction and maintenance of general anesthesia
Isoflurane action
Depresses the central nervous system, and produces unconsciousness (also causes vasodilation which lowers blood pressure)
Isoflurane side effects
Hypotension, airway irritation. RESPIRATORY DEPRESSION AND MALIGNANT HYPOTHERMIA.
