A Critical Literature Review of 1,500 words (+/- 10%).
Assessment 1 Weighting
30% of the total marks for the subject REM502.
Subject Learning Outcome (SLO) a
Identify Challenges and opportunities for Research and Development (R&D) in the Information Communication Technology (ICT) Sector.
Subject Learning Outcome (SLO) b
Critically examine relevant literature and the industry landscape to identify gaps and formulate research questions and objectives pertinent to the ICT domain.
Subject Learning Outcome (SLO) e
Integrate ethical principles related to the design of R&D solutions.
Purpose of a Literature Review
To gain an understanding of the existing body of research, industry ICT trends, and debates, involving a summary and critical evaluation of strengths and weaknesses of accessed sources.
Iterative Process
The understanding that research elements such as the abstract, statement, gaps, and questions may change based on findings during literature search and methodologies chosen.
Research Proposal (Assessment 3)
The final report and presentation due in Week 12 for which Assessment 1 provides academic substantiation and methodology rationale.
Source Currency Requirement
Sources published within the last 5 years are preferred to reflect the newest discoveries and avoid duplication.
Minimum Source Quantity
A minimum of 8 recently published peer-reviewed sources including journal articles, books, and conference papers.
Reputable Source Threshold
80% of reviewed papers must be credible scholarly materials (journal articles, books, and conference papers) and 80% must be reputable sources.
Critical Evaluation Expectation
Detailed commentary on the analysis of strengths and weaknesses; students must summarize findings and add interpretations rather than cutting and pasting the abstract.
Referencing Style
APA 7th referencing style guidelines must be used for in-text citations and the reference list.

Critique Rubric Criterion
An analysis and evaluation of sources worth 30% of the assessment, requiring a summary of ideas and a clear rationale for the study aim.
High Distinction Topic Requirement
A clear, specific topic that advances knowledge in the area by identifying and fully addressing current challenges in the IT/SE context.
Effective Communication (Written)
A 20% rubric criterion evaluating how information is structured, sequenced, and if specialized language/terminology is precisely employed.
