What is Joint protection?
A series of techniques integrated into all activities to reduce stress on joints.
Why do we use Joint protection techniques?
To reduce bio mechanical stress on joints, reducing pain and deformities.
What are the six main ways of protecting joints
The 6 principles, work simplification, pacing, respect for pain, splinting and exercise
What are the 6 principles of joint protection?
Avoid movements in directions of deformities, avoid postures that will put stress on joints, avoid sustained tension on muscles, avoid static positions, use the largest and most stable joint for the task, use assistive devices to reduce stress on joints.
What is work simplification?
Modifying/ organising the environment or method to reduce demands of a task.
What are some methods of pacing?
How often the tasks are done, taking breaks, mixing heavy and light jobs, not starting activities that cant be stopped, resting body and joints.
What is meant by respect for pain?
It means that pain is an indicator to stop, and if pain isn’t respected and the individual pushes past the pain, it may cause more damage. It is important to regularly monitor pain.
What is splinting?
A method of using splint to support joints and limit deformities.
How can exercise be beneficial for joint protection?
It has been shown to relieve symptoms of arthritis and help protect joints from more damage. It can also reduce pressure on joints, and keep bones and cartilage strong.
