estrogen surge causes surge of luteinizing hormone in the ovary; the fully developed follicle in the ovary bursts and releases the egg

corpus luteum secretes progesterone
Menstrual Phase
superficial layers of endometrium detach from uterine walls and exit through cervis + vagina
Proliferative Phase
endometrium is rebuilt and thickened due to an estrogen surge and a slight increase in progesterone
secretory phase
progesterone from corpus luteum reaches the uterus to increase vascularization and nutrient secret into the uterus
