Computer
An electronic device capable of taking an input, processing data, storing information and providing an output.
Data
Raw, unprocessed information.
Information
Data that people understand.
Mainframe computer
A computer with huge processing power and data storage capabilities built to handle enormous amounts of data and support large volumes of simultaneous users.
Microprocessor
An integrated circuit (IC) that contains a central processing unit (CPU) and is embedded into devices to help them carry out tasks.
Desktop computer
A computer designed to stay in one place, traditionally consisting of a separate monitor, computer, keyboard, and mouse.
Laptop computer
A portable, battery-powered computer with built-in components including a monitor, keyboard, and trackpad or touch screen.
Mobile phone
An ultra portable electronic device designed to be lightweight and used to transmit information between people and devices using radio waves.
Smartphone
A versatile general purpose device that uses a subscriber identity module (SIM) card to link to a network carrier.
Subscriber identity module (SIM)
A card used to link a mobile device to a network carrier, allowing it to make phone calls and send messages.
Voice over internet protocol (VoIP)
A technology for audio and visual communication via the internet that requires extra apps and a forward-facing camera for video calls.
Specialist phone
A device designed for a particular group of users or environment that prioritises specific features over general purpose use.
Rugged phones
Devices designed for tough environments with thick screens and outer casing built to withstand water submersion, dust, and extreme temperatures.
Tablet
A general purpose device that sits between a laptop and a smartphone, focused on entertainment and productivity with a larger screen.
Games console
A specialised PC for playing video games, featuring powerful processors and graphics for high quality smooth gameplay.
Home entertainment system
A hub for connecting audio and video devices, such as TVs, speakers, and media players together.
Multifunctional device
A device designed to carry out a wide range of tasks by combining functions that would usually be separate, such as a smartphone or smart TV.
Convergence
The merging of technologies that would usually be separate, which led to the rise of smartphones.
