1 Photosynthesis

Producers absorb CO₂ from atmosphere and convert it into organic molecules (glucose, starch, fats, proteins). Carbon enters the biosphere.

Feeding

When animals eat plants (or each other), carbon compounds are passed along the food chain.

Respiration

All organisms respire — breaking down glucose releases CO₂ back into the atmosphere.

Decomposition

Decomposers break down dead organisms, releasing CO₂ back into the atmosphere. Carbon is recycled.

then

Fossilisation

In anaerobic conditions, decomposition is incomplete. Carbon-rich material becomes fossilised over millions of years.

Combustion

Burning fossil fuels or biomass releases CO₂ into the atmosphere.
