National FFA Organization (FFA)
The premier youth organization that prepares members for leadership and careers in the science, business, and technology sectors of agriculture.
Leadership
The action of leading or directing a group.
Mission
An important goal or task assigned to a group.
Smith-Hughes Act
A 1917 law that gave federal funding to pre-collegiate (high school) courses that focus on agriculture and home economics.
Convention
A meeting of representatives for discussion of and action on matters of common concern.
New Farmers of America (NFA)
A group similar to the FFA that was open to African American students in schools that were segregated by law before merging with the FFA in 1965.
Vision
The ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom.
Motto
The guiding principles of a person or an organization, which for the FFA is: 'Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve.'
Creed

Code of Ethics
The rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular group, adopted by the FFA in 1952.
Chapter
A local group of FFA members in a school system.
leadership development event (LDE)
An activity to develop skills in public speaking, communication, and decision making and enhance career skills and knowledge of the FFA.
career development event (CDE)
An activity that builds on classroom information and encourages members to put their knowledge into practice through industry-level techniques.
