They are very small and somewhat translucent. However if you focus on a still piece of Obelia dichotoma, you can see their movements to locate them. They will have visible appendages up by their head and the larger anterior portion will be clinging to the hydroid.

Habitat: In the range of Southern Alaska to southern California, they are found on and under rocks, on algae and eelgrass, and in outer rocky coasts as well as bays.
Distinguishing factors: It has no acontia, column no tubercles and no adherent material. Its oral disk typically has narrow radiating white lines which originate near the mouth and has externally brooding young of various sizes and year-round.

Tips for Identifcation: Lottia digitalis can be distinguished from other limpets by its ribbed shell. If one runs their fingers along this species, noticeable bumps or “ribs” can be felt compared to other limpets which possess a smoother shell.
