Mikhail Gorbachev
He would become the Soviet leader in 1985 and would lead an effort to reform the Soviet system.

Perestroika
This means 'restructuring'. It was the policy and attempt to repair and fix a broken system a in Communist Soviet Union. It would see the introduction of limited free enterprise and some private property.

Glasnost
This means 'openness'. This policy let Soviet citizens and officials discuss openly the strengths and weaknesses of the Soviet Union. This would pave the way for open reform and addressing serious issues in the system.

Ethnic Cleansing
The Serbian policy of killing or forcibly removing Bosnian Muslims from their lands in Bosnia.

Guest Workers
A policy of importing workers from poorer nations to come and work in factories and other industries in wealthier nations that need the boost in worker numbers. An example would be a large migration of workers from Turkey that went to West Germany to fill vacant jobs.

Multiculturalism
A term referring to the connection of several cultural or ethnic groups within a society. This can be seen in the art of Yinka Shonibare that blended Western and African art to create something new.

Globalization
A term used to describe the process by which people and nations have become more interdependent. It is now common for people to use and buy goods and services that come from all over the world.

Multinational Corporation
A company with divisions in more than two countries. Examples would include General Electric, Sony Corporation and ExxonMobil.

Global Warming
The belief that a threat to the environment exists because of man made and produced byproducts such as fossil fuel emissions.

Greenhouse Effect
The warming of the earth because of the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Developed Nations
The name for the rich nations. These include the United States, Canada, Germany, Japan. These nations have well developed economies and industrial infrastructures.

Developing Nations
The term used to describe nations that are generally poor and lack enough food or industrial production to meet the needs of their populations.
