What are the three magnetic materials?
Iron, Nickel, Cobalt
What happens when two like poles are placed next to/ in front of each other?
They repel
What happens when two unlike poles are placed next to/ in front of each other?
They attract
What is a field?
A region of space where an object will experience a force
If the magnetic field lines are close what does that mean?
The field is strongerand the force experienced is greater.
Where in a magnetic region will you experience the greatest force?
The poles
Which way do the field lines go?
From North to South
What is a soft magnetic material?
When the material is removed from the magnetic field its domains do not line up
What is a hard magnetic material
When the material is removed from the magnetic field its domains continue to be lined up
If the current is coming towards you (dot in the middle of a magnetic field) which way do the field lines go?
Anticlockwise
If the current is going away from you (cross in the middle of a magnetic field) which way do the field lines go?
Clockwise
What is a solenoid?
A coil of wire
What is the motor effect?
When a current flows through a wire in a magnetic field it can create a force that moves the wire. If they are at right angles the maximum force will be created.
What is the formula to calculate a force in a magnetic field?
B(magnetic strength(T)) x I x L(length of wire(m))
What is an electric motor?
A device that converts energy transferred electrically into kinetic energy
What happens when a wire moves through a magnetic field?
A potential difference is induced, if the circuit is complete there will be a current
What is Lenz’s Law
If a magnet is pushed into a coil, it induces a potential difference that causes a current that then produces a magnetic field. The field produced always opposes the change causing it by conservation of energy
What is a generator?
A device that converts kinetic energy into electrical energy
