Theme

Central Idea
the most important point or idea an author is making in a text

Inference
using clues from the text plus what you already know to figure something out

Textual Evidence
words or sentences from the text that prove your answer

Point of View
the perspective of the character telling or experiencing the story, including what they think, feel, and believe about the events around them

Narrator
the voice telling the story

Figurative Language
words used in a creative way that don't mean exactly what they say

Simile
comparing two things using "like" or "as" (ex: sleeping like a log)

Metaphor
comparing two things by saying one thing IS another (ex: life IS a rollercoaster)

Personification
giving human qualities to an object or animal

Flashback
a scene that takes the story back in time

Plot
the sequence of events in a story

Conflict
a problem the characters face in a story

Resolution
how the problem gets solved at the end

Author's Purpose
why the author wrote the text (to inform, persuade, or entertain)

Claim
the author's main argument or opinion

Evidence
facts, examples, or details used to support a claim

Text Structure
how an informational text is organized (cause/effect, compare/contrast, problem/solution, chronological order)

Chronological
events told in time order, from first to last

Compare/Contrast
showing how two things are alike and different

Cause and Effect
explaining why something happened and what resulted from it

Context Clues
words around an unknown word that help you figure out its meaning

Connotation
the feeling or emotion a word carries (ex: "cheap" vs. "affordable")

Denotation
the exact dictionary definition of a word

Root Word
the base of a word that carries the main meaning (ex: "port" means carry)

Prefix
a word part added to the beginning that changes the meaning (ex: un-, re-, pre-)

Suffix
a word part added to the end that changes the meaning (ex: -ful, -less, -tion)

Idiom
a phrase that means something different from its literal words (ex: "break a leg" = good luck)

Gist
the main point or most important idea of a text, stated briefly in your own words
