Tolerance
The need for a higher dose of a medication to achieve the desired effect.
Cross Tolerance
A phenomenon where a higher dose of drug X is needed due to prior use of drug Y.
Physical Dependence
A condition characterized by withdrawal symptoms upon discontinuation of a drug.
Psychological Dependence
A state where the desire and craving for a drug drives someone to use it without the physical withdrawal symptoms.
Substance Use Disorder
The term replacing addiction, considered less stigmatizing.
Withdrawal Syndrome
A group of symptoms that occur upon cessation of drug use, often severe with certain substances.
Delirium Tremens
A severe form of alcohol withdrawal that can include hallucinations and seizures.
Amphetamines
Stimulants that can have both therapeutic applications and potential for abuse.
Cocaine
A stimulant that can lead to cardiovascular and respiratory complications.
Nicotine
A highly addictive substance found in tobacco that can cause both physical and psychological dependence.
Alcohol Equivalence
A standard measurement indicating the amount of pure alcohol in different types of drinks.
Caffeine Dependence
An addiction to caffeine that can result in withdrawal symptoms.
Narcan
An opioid overdose antidote that can be acquired over the counter.
Psychotropic Substances
Drugs that affect mental processes and can alter perception, mood, and cognition.
Benzodiazepines
A class of medications that can lead to dependence and severe withdrawal symptoms.
