A secret 1980s operation where the U.S. sold weapons to Iran to fund Contra rebels in Nicaragua, despite a Congressional ban.
Iran Hostage Crisis
A 444 day period 1979-1981 where American diplomats were held captive by Iranian students following the Iranian revolution.
Jimmy Carter
Democratic president 1977-1981. Elected because he is seen as a D.C. outsider. Known for the Camp David Accords. His Presidency is remembered for failing to get Iran Hostages released and the Panama Canal Treaty.
Kent State Shooting
Killing of four and wounding of nine unarmed college youths by the Ohio National Guard troops on May 4 1970 during a rally opposing the expanding involvement of the Vietnam War the National Guard presence on campus and the draft.
New Federalism
Nixon Domestic Policy where the U.S. supports Asian allies with money and weapons instead of troops.
Nixon Doctrine
States are giving more control over over federal funds are spent in the states increasing their rights, which had been taken away in the New Deal and Great Society.
OPEC organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries
An organization of oil-producing nations that caused a massive U.S. energy crisis in 1973 by halting oil shipments.
Panama Canal Treaty
America agrees to turn over control of the canal by 1999 . It seen as President Carter giving the canal away.

Classified government history documenting the mistakes and deception by the government during the Vietnam War. Leaked by a military analyst whistle blower and published in the New York Times in June 1971

Republican President 1969-1974. His domestic policy was called New Federalism. Supported Detente and normalized relation with China. Stars withdrawal of troops from, Vietnam War an resigned from office due to Watergate
SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks)
Negotiations and treaties between the U.S. and USSR Aimed at limiting the number of number of nuclear missiles search countries could posses (SALT I, 1972) and tighter restriction on new missile technologies and launchers (SALT II 1979).
Stagflation
A Difficult economic period during the 1970s featuring both high inflation (rising prices) and high unemployment (stagnant growth)
