watershed
the land that water flows across, under, or through on its way to a river

deposition
rivers and streams carry and deposit (put down) sediment (little rocks and pebbles)

headwaters
small streams that flow down a mountain and collect together to begin a river

divide
the top of a mountain or high hills that separate where water flows

tributary
small streams, rivers, or creeks that flow into a big river

main stem
a big or large river

river mouth
the part of the river that opens or flows into a larger body of water

floodplain
the land on each side of a river that holds water when it floods (water gets to high)

sediment
sand, rocks, small pebbles and soil that gets washed or moved down river

elevation
The height of land above sea level

runoff
water that flows on the ground; you usually see it during a rain storm
