Buffers
contain a significant amount of a weak acid and its conjugate base (or a weak base and its conjugate acid)
Henderson-Hasselbalch Equation
An equation that relates the pH of a buffer solution to the initial concentration of the buffer components
Conjugate Base
Acid loses a proton -H (HCl →Cl-)
Conjugate Acid
Base gains a proton +H (NH3→NH4+)
Buffer Range
The pH range over which a particular acid and its conjugate base can be effective (pKa+-1)
Buffer Capacity
The amount of acid or base that can be added to a buffer without causing a large change in the pH
Acid-base titration
A laboratory procedure that an unknown concentration solution (acid or base) is reacted/titrated with solution of known concentration (acid or base)
