ECG/Telemetry
Lead
Purpose: monitors heart rhythm, displays heart rate and rhythm on hemodynamic monitor, can also sense respiratory rate

Pulse Oximeter
Lead
Purpose: monitors oxygen saturation, also monitors heart rate

Blood pressure cuff
Lead
Purpose: Monitoring of blood pressure (systolic, diastolic, and MAP); also capture HR

Temporary pacemaker (epicardial, transcutaneous, transvenous)
Lead
Purpose: Cardiac pacing for abnormal rhythms such as bradycardia, heart block, or unstable rhythms

Peripheral IV
Line
Purpose: delivery of IV fluids and medications

Arterial Line
Line
Purpose: Continuous BP monitoring and arterial blood draws for ABGs
(Most common site is radial; can also be femoral)

Central Venous Catheter
Line
Purpose: delivery of fluids and medication; can be used for blood draw; can be used to monitor central venous pressure (CVP)

Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC)
Line
Purpose: long term IV access (meds, nutrition)
(located in upper arm but considered a CVC)

Pulmonary Artery (PA) Catheter (Swan Ganz)
Line
Purpose: Used to monitor and measure heart pressures that indicate cardiac function and fluid status (e.g. pulmonary artery pressure); Can also be used for blood draws for venous blood gas

Chest Tube
Drain
Purpose: used to drain air, blood, or fluid from pleural space

Urinary Catheter
Drain
Purpose: urine output monitoring/drainage

Fecal Management system
Drain
Purpose: used in patients with excessive loose stools in order to protect skin

Surgical Drains
Drain
Purpose: drains pus, blood, or other fluid postoperatively to prevent it from accumulating in the body (Drains can be active (driven by negative pressure) or passive (simply channels fluids)

Gastrointestinal (GI tubes)
Tube
Purpose: used to administer feedings and medication; can also function as a drain for GI contents when connected to suction

Endotracheal tube (ETT) - breathing tube
Tube
Purpose: airway, mechanical ventilation (connected to mechanical ventilator)

Tracheostomy- breathing tube
Tube
Purpose: longer term airway/ventilation; allows for secretion management; improved comfort and oral hygiene for patient, may also allow for speech and nutrition

Non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV)
Device
Purpose: non invasive ventilatory support (mask instead of artificial airway); continuous positive airway (CPAP) or bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP)

Dialysis (hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT))
Device
Purpose: renal support; removes metabolic waste and excess fluid; corrects electrolyte imbalances
