Council of Nicea
Took place in 325 AD. Also known as the trinity Council. Declared that there were three divine persons sharing one and the same nature
Council of Ephesus
Took place in 431 AD also known as the Marian council it reaffirmed the Church’s belief that in the humanity and divinity of Christ and also proclaimed the Church’s belief that Mary is the Mother of God
Council of Chalcedon
Took place in 451 AD also known as the Christ Council. The church’s teachings defined the Chruch’s belief in Jesus as truly god and truly man, like us in all things but sin
This saint used a shamrock to explain the Trinity
St. Patrick explained the mystery of the Trinity in Ireland by using the Shamrock to explain that the three petals were like the Father, Son, and Spirit while their divine unity was like the one stem.

Arianism
jesus is a lesser god, a being created by god. Jesus does not possess by nature any divine qualities. The father adopted him as son, The Catholic Doctrine responded that jesus had the same nature as God; from the Nicene Creed
Nestorianism
Jesus and God share common wills not natures. Mary is not the mother of God;she is the mother of Jesus as the Christ. The Catholic Doctrine responded that there are two natures in Christ; fully divine and fully human. mary is the Mother of God
Monophysitism
Jesus is God and only appeared to be human. The Catholic Doctrine responded that Jesus is ONE person with TWO natures
Pelagianism
We can earn our own salvation; we do not need God’s gift of grace. The Catholic Doctrine says that one needs divine grace for salvation
Manichaeism
The world is evil; we can be freed from it through ascetic discipline; reincarnation. The Catholic Doctrine responds by saying the task of the Church is to act as a sign of God’s love in the world
Iconoclasm
The veneration of religious images and icons is idolatrous and a violation of the first commandment. the Catholic doctrine responded by saying that the use of holy images is good and useful for devotion. it shows respect for God, Mary and the saints who are represented by icons.
