What are the subatomic particles?
Protons, neutrons, and electrons are the three main subatomic particles in an atom.
Describe protons in terms of mass, charge, and location.
a mass of 1 atomic mass unit a positive charge (+1), and located in the nucleus of the atom.
Describe neutrons in terms of mass, charge, and location.
a mass of approximately 1 atomic mass unit no charge (0), and located in the nucleus.
Describe electrons in terms of mass, charge, and location.
a very small mass, a negative charge (-1), and located in energy levels around the nucleus.
What is the atomic number?
is the number of protons in an atom
What is the mass number?
is the total number of protons and neutrons in an nucleus.
List properties of metals.
are shiny, bendable, and easily pass heat and electricity.
List properties of non-metals.
Non-metals are dull, block heat and electricity, and can be any state of matter at room temperature.
List properties of metalloids.
Metalloids is the middle ground.
They look like metals but behave like non-metals, and they pass electricity under conditions.
How are elements arranged on the Periodic Table?
are arranged by increasing atomic number and categorized into groups (columns) and periods (rows).
Define pure substance.
is made of just one thing, so it is exactly the same all the way through.
Define molecule.
is two or more atoms stuck together, and they can be the same kind or different kinds.
Define element.
is a pure substance made of only one kind of atom that cannot be split into anything simpler.
Define compound
is a substance formed when two or more different elements chemically bond together.
Classify H2 as a molecular element or a molecular compound.
H2 is a molecular element because it consists of two atoms of the same element.
Classify H2O as a molecular element or a molecular compound.
H2O is a molecular compound because it consists of atoms from different elements (hydrogen and oxygen).
How do you identify the number of atoms in a chemical formula?
Chemical formulas shows how many of each atom are in a molecule by using small numbers below the letters.
What is a physical change?
Physical change changes how a substance looks or feels, but does not turn it into a new material.
What is a chemical change?
Chemical change destroys the old material and creates an entirely new substance.
List indicators of physical change.
Looking for shifts in size, shape, state of matter, or colour, while the material itself stays the same.
List indicators of chemical change.
Looking for unexpected color changes, rising bubbles, solid flakes forming, or shifts in temperature.
