Morbidity Statistics
Numerical data that describe the occurrence of disease in a population.
Mortality Statistics
Numerical data concerned with deaths and their causes, indicating community healthfulness.
Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)
Central statistical authority created in 2013 (RA 10625) that conducts censuses and compiles vital statistics in the Philippines.
National Statistics Office (NSO)

Vital Registration System
Continuous government system for registering births, deaths, and other vital events.
Death Registration
Official notification and recording of a death, legally required before burial or cremation.
Arithmetic Method (Population Projection)
Assumes a constant absolute annual increase: Pf = Pp + n k.
Geometric Method (Population Projection)
Assumes a constant percentage growth: Pf = Pp (1 + k)^n.
Rate (Statistical)
Measure of event occurrence over a specified time interval, often expressed per 1,000 or 100,000 population.
Crude Birth Rate (CBR)
Number of live births in a year per 1,000 mid-year total population.
General Fertility Rate (GFR)
Number of live births in a year per 1,000 women aged 15-44.
Crude Death Rate (CDR)
Number of deaths in a year per 1,000 mid-year total population.
Specific Mortality Rate
Death rate limited to a particular group (e.g., sex, occupation) per 1,000 in that group.
Age Specific Death Rate
Deaths in a specific age group per 1,000 population of the same age group per year.
Cause-of-Death Rate
Deaths from a specified cause in a year per 1,000 mid-year population.
Infant Mortality Rate (IMR)
Deaths of infants under one year per 1,000 live births in the same year.
Case Fatality Rate (CFR)

Incidence Rate
Number of new disease cases in a population at risk during a specified period.
Prevalence Rate
Proportion of existing (new and old) disease cases in a population at a point or period in time.
Prospective (Cohort) Study
Study that follows an exposed group forward in time to measure disease development.
Retrospective Study
Investigation that looks back at past events to compare people with and without disease.
Life Expectancy
Average number of years a newborn is expected to live under current mortality conditions.
Primary Health Care
Essential health services including education, nutrition, immunization, sanitation, MCH, disease control, basic treatment, and essential drugs.
Sample Registration System
Modeled or sample-based system used to estimate vital rates where complete registration is lacking.
Household Survey (Vital Statistics)
Survey method used to estimate events like infant or child mortality in populations without full registration.
Hospital Survey
Collection of morbidity or mortality data directly from hospital records.
Age Structure Effect
Impact of population age composition on crude rates, e.g., rising CDR in aging populations despite health improvements.
