yll
Years of Life Lost (YLL)
A measure of how many years of expected life are lost due to premature death. It is the fatal component of burden of disease
Years lost due to disability (YLD)
A measure of how many healthy years of life are lost due to living with illness, injury or disability. It is the non-fatal component of burden of disease
calculating daly
A woman is diagnosed with cancer at age 45 and then dies from the cancer at age 55. Her life expectancy is 85 yrs.
YLD = 55 – 45
= 10 (ten years ‘lost’ due to disability…so due to living with the cancer)
YLL = expected life expectancy – age at death
= 85 – 55
= 30
TOTAL DALY (total burden/impact of disease) = 10 (YLD) + 30 (YLL) = 40 DALYs
