intro

·       This is a famous quote by Charles Swindoll that my grandpa, bob Kelly, had hanging in his office. He lived this quote out until his very last breath. That’s just the kind of man grandpa was. Grandpa was the most loving man, and so selfless in the way he served our country and dedicated his time to others, not only was he such a noble man, but grandpa could never say no to a good time and was always laughing or making others laugh.

main pt 1

·       : The first thing I’d like to mention about my grandpa is that he loved so hard. He showed his love through acts of service and through words of love. Every time I would sleep over at his house, I would wake up to the smell of freshly made pancakes and bacon he cooked himself. Not only would he make the most amazing breakfast, but he’d look at me with such a warm smile and say how bout we go get some doughnuts, so we’d hop in his truck, and he let me pick out a dozen doughnuts to take back home. No matter how busy he was he always had time for his children and grandchildren.

main pt 2

·       not only did Grandpa know how to love, he knew how to serve others and his country in such selflessness. He was a helicopter piolet in the army, and he gave his all. He sacrificed so much to serve our country, and his service will not ever be forgotten. Another point to be made is while he was suffering through a terrible cancer, he made sure to tell us how much he loved us, and he poured all his time into his family, he still made time to cook, play pickleball, and just talk to us like there was not a care in the world.

main pt 3

·       Not only did grandpa know how to love and serve others, but he was always laughing or making someone laugh. He was always up for something fun. I’ll never forget when I was 14, he gave me a driving lesson in his old truck we called Chester. He was going to let me drive it down to the empty fairgrounds, but when I was trying to reverse, I started going forward and ran straight into my mom’s car. Instead of getting upset, we just looked at each other, and he started laughing just so hard. He ended up driving us to the fairgrounds, then he let me back in the driver’s seat and that’s where I learned to do a 3-point turn. Not only did he like to have fun with his grandkids, but in his own time back in the day, he raced dirt bikes. I never really got a chance to ask him about it, but I’m sure he put his heart and soul into it.

conclusion

·       Grandpa was such a loving man, in the way he dedicated his time to others and showed countless acts of service. He was always so selfless, especially in going away to serve our country. He was such a noble man, and I could not be more grateful for the time I got to spend with him. Unfortunately, we lost grandpa in September of 2024 to an awful brain cancer. The last time I ever got to see him, he sat me down and said, “Now sweetie, don’t you be sad when I’m gone, I know where I’m going and you’ll see me again soon.” I hold onto his smile and his laugh every day, and his love, selflessness, and love for having fun will never be forgotten.
