Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible behavior (DRI)
A reinforcement schedule that involves strengthening a behavior that is incompatible with the undesired behavior.
Differential Reinforcement of Alternative behavior (DRA)
A reinforcement schedule that involves reinforcing an alternative behavior to replace an undesired behavior, allowing both behaviors to occur.
Differential Reinforcement of Other behavior (DRO)
A reinforcement schedule that provides reinforcement for the absence of a specific undesired behavior for a given time period.
Differential Reinforcement of Low rates of responding (DRL)
A procedure that reinforces a lower frequency of a behavior rather than eliminating it entirely.
Full-session DRL
A DRL schedule that requires a specific number of responses throughout an entire session to receive reinforcement.
Interval DRL
A DRL schedule that reinforces behavior if it occurs at or below a specified limit within preset time intervals.
Spaced Responding DRL
A DRL schedule that reinforces lower rates of behavior if responses occur spaced out over time.
Noncontingent Reinforcement
Providing reinforcement on a fixed schedule regardless of the individual's behavior to reduce the motivation to engage in undesired behavior.
Escape Conditioning
A procedure in which a behavior is strengthened by the removal of an aversive stimulus.
Avoidance Conditioning
A procedure where a behavior is strengthened to prevent the occurrence of an aversive stimulus.
Punishment (technical meaning)
The occurrence of a behavior followed immediately by a consequence that decreases the future likelihood of that behavior.
Positive Punishment
The presentation of an aversive stimulus following a behavior that decreases the likelihood of that behavior occurring in the future.
Negative Punishment
The removal of a desirable stimulus following a behavior that decreases the likelihood of that behavior occurring in the future.
Behavioral Insomnia
Sleep problems caused by learned behaviors and environmental factors, not biological sleep disorders.
Chronotherapy
A method to adjust sleep schedules by gradually shifting bedtimes to the desired sleep period.
Functional Communication Training (FCT)
Teaching individuals to use functional communication to express their needs instead of engaging in problem behaviors.
Home Baseline
An unstructured assessment simulating meal settings in a home environment to gather information on a child's eating behavior.
Structured Baseline
A controlled assessment environment created by a provider to standardize feeding sessions.
Behavioral Sequence
A sequence involving both respondent and operant conditioning, such as a child running to buy ice cream upon hearing an ice cream truck's bell.
Counterconditioning
A process where a new response is conditioned to a conditioned stimulus (CS) while the former conditioned response is being extinguished.
Aversion Therapy
A treatment method where troublesome reinforcers are paired with aversive stimuli to reduce undesired behaviors.
Token Economy
A behavioral management system where tokens are given as reinforcement for desirable behaviors and can be exchanged for privileges or items.
Escape Extinction
A procedure that aims to reduce avoidance or escape behaviors by not allowing the individual to escape the aversive situation.
Prompting Procedures
An approach that involves guiding or cueing individuals to perform a desired behavior including verbal, visual, or physical prompts.
