Self-Concept
All of the attitudes, notions, beliefs, and convictions that make up a person’s self-knowledge.
Low Self-Concept
Results in maladaptive behavioral responses and is influenced by factors such as culture and the beliefs of significant others.
Identity Diffusion
Failure to bring various childhood identifications into an effective adult personality.
Dissociation
An attempt to cope with deep-seated emotional anxiety or distress.
Dissociative Amnesia
Characterized by an inability to remember personal information that cannot be explained by ordinary forgetfulness.
Dissociative Fugue
Sudden, unexpected travel accompanied by an inability to recall the past, often in response to trauma.
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)
Presence of two or more identities or personalities that repeatedly take control of an individual’s behavior.
Depersonalization/Derealization Disorder
Response to severe anxiety involving detachment from self or surroundings, potentially serving as a defense mechanism.
Dissociative Trance Disorder
Occurs when trances cause clinically significant distress or functional impairment.
Therapeutic Interventions for Dissociative Disorders
Involves long-term therapy in an outpatient setting, with hospitalization required only for danger or severe dysfunction.
Pharmacologic therapy
Includes the use of antidepressants and antipsychotics, typically prescribed for short periods.
Nursing (Therapeutic) Process
Involves assessments of client behaviors, anxiety, and social functioning, with interventions aimed at promoting safety and support.
Cultural Trances
Voluntarily entered states that cause no distress or harm and do not involve a loss of identity.

Relationships, confidence, sexual identity, and body image especially during adolescence.
