AIM
To investigate how Romanian immigrants in the UK experience acculturation
METHOD
Qualitative study (interviews)
First-generation Romanian immigrants living in the UK
PROCEDURE
Participants took part in semi-structured interviews
Interviews explored: cultural identity, sense of belonging, language use, and experiences with British culture
Responses were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns in acculturation experiences
RESULTS
Many participants initially experienced separation, maintaining Romanian culture while limiting interaction with British society
Over time, most participants shifted toward integration, maintaining their original culture while also adopting aspects of British culture
Language proficiency abd social contact were key factors influencing successful acculturation
Some participants experienced identity conflict, especially early in the acculturation process
CONCLUSION
Acculturation is a dynamic and gradual process, not a fixed outcome
Immigrants may use different acculturation strategies at different stages of their lives
The study supports Berry’s acculturation model, particularly the importance of integration for positive adaptation
Sociocultural context plays a major rolein shaping identity and behavior
