what are the three types of stress
tension, compression, and shear
what is compression?
compression stress resulting strain= shortening; shortens and thickens a rock by folding and faulting
what plate boundary is connected to compression?
converge (→ ←), compress, shorten, fold
what is tension?
tension stress resulting strain= stretching; elongates and thins a rock body, fractures surface rocks along faults
what plate boundary is connected to tension
diverge (← →), tension, stretching, thinning of crust
what is shear stress?
shear stress resulting strain= twisting laterally; deforms along planes parallel to applied stress (lateral twisting of a rock body)
what plate boundary is connected to shear stress?
transformative, shear, shearing (twists laterally), bending
