Time of Flight (Go Return Time)
The elapsed time from when a pulse is emitted until the reflection returns, used to gauge the distance of a reflector.
Relationship: Time of Flight and Depth
Time of flight is directly related to depth.
13-Microsecond Rule
A rule stating that for every 13μs of go-return time, the reflector depth is 1cm and the total distance traveled is 2cm.
Reflector depth for 26μs
2cm
Total distance traveled for 26μs
4cm
Reflector depth for 39μs
3cm
Total distance traveled for 39μs
6cm
Reflector depth for 52μs
4cm
Total distance traveled for 52μs
8cm
PRP (Pulse Repetition Period)
The time of flight of a pulse from the transducer to the maximum imaging depth and back; the 13 microsecond rule applies.
PRF (Pulse Repetition Frequency) in superficial structures
PRF is high for superficial structures.
Relationship: PRF and Maximum Imaging Depth
Pulse Repetition Frequency is inversely related to the maximum imaging depth.
