A number of people hold this view that there is a need to restrict certain websites on the Internet to prevent exposure to violence online. While this view is widely agreed, I strongly disagree with it for several reasons.
Body 1.1
On the one hand, limiting access to violent websites brings significant benefits. Firstly, it helps protect children and adolescents who are particularly vulnerable to harmful influences.
Body 1.2
For example, exposure to graphic videos of real-life violence or terrorist acts on unregulated platforms may lead to desensitisation and even aggressive behaviour. This concern is supported by research from the American Psychological Association, which suggests a correlation between violent media exposure and increased aggression among teenagers.
Body 1.3
Secondly, such restrictions can enhance national security by reducing online radicalisation. According to UK Home Office statistics, Internet filtering systems which block millions of harmful webpages each year have contributed to a noticeable decline in extremism-related activities.
Body 2.2
On the other hand, broad restrictions on online content have several serious drawbacks. Firstly, they may undermine freedom of expression unless content directly incites violence or immediate harm. For instance, blocking videos of wars or political protests, often classified as “violent content”, can prevent the public from accessing important information about global events
Body 2.3
Secondly, such measures are often ineffective in practice due to technological limitations. According to a 2022 Rand Corporation report, many users can easily bypass restrictions using VPNs or other tools, which means that violent content may simply move to less regulated online spaces.

In short, while some restrictions on violent websites are necessary to protect children, a balanced approach is essential as excessive censorship can harm freedom of expression and prove ineffective.
