Why does participant observation have high validity?
It observes what people actually do, not just what they say, producing rich qualitative data about real behaviour.
What is verstehen and how does participant observation achieve it?
Verstehen means empathetic understanding. By living as part of the group, the researcher experiences their life, values and viewpoints, giving deeper insight.
Why is participant observation a flexible research method?
Researchers do not start with fixed questions or hypotheses, so they can adapt the research and develop new ideas as they observe.
What does it mean that theories from participant observation are “grounded”?
Theories are based on real-life observations, rather than being decided before research begins.
Why is participant observation useful for studying deviant or secretive groups?
Researchers can build trust and rapport, allowing access to groups like gangs or drug users who may distrust questionnaires or interviews.
Why might observation be better than asking questions in some studies?
People may be unaware of their own behaviours or assumptions, so observing them (e.g. in studies of police decision-making) reveals things they could not explain in interviews
