Satellite State
Description: nominally independent Eastern European and Asian nations under heavy Soviet political, economic, and military control (1945–1990).
Consequences: Acted as a communist buffer / Solidified Soviet influence in Europe / Suppression ex. Hungary 1956 + Czechoslovakia 1956
Connection: COMECON used to tie these nations together / Warsaw Pact (1955) unifying military structure.

Iron Curtain
Definition: the ideological, symbolic, and physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas—Soviet-influenced Eastern Europe and democratic Western Europe—from the end of WWII in 1945 until the end of the Cold War in 1991
Consequences: Formation of NATO / Warsaw Pact alliances / Massive trade disruption / Intense isolation of Eastern Europe
Connection: Nuclear Arms Race

Truman Doctrine
Definition: 1947 U.S. foreign policy pledge to provide political, military, and economic aid to democratic nations under threat from authoritarian forces, primarily communism.
Consequences: Made containment the core of American foreign policy/precedent for military and economic aid / highened tension and espionage
Connection: Led to the formation of NATO in 1949 / Stopping the ‘domino theory’

Berlin Airlift
Definition: June 1948–September 1949. A massive Allied humanitarian campaign that flew food, fuel, and supplies into West Berlin after the Soviet Union blocked all ground, rail, and water access to the city.
Consequences: Solidified Cold War Division in the US / Formal Division of Germany to East/West / West Berlin as democratic symbol
Connection: Creation of NATO (1949)

Marshall Plan (European Recovery Program, 1948–1951)
Definition: U.S.-led initiative providing over a billion in economic aid to rebuild Western Europe, combat widespread poverty, and halt the expansion of Soviet communism.
Consequences: Economic Rebirth 35% above pre-war levels by 1952 / Cemented a bipolar Cold War World

N.A.T.O.
Definition: North Atlantic Treaty Organization. (NATO) is a 32-member political and military alliance founded in 1949 to guarantee the collective security, freedom, and defense of North American and European nations. Its core principle is collective defense, where an attack against one member is considered an attack against all.
Consequences: West German Integration (1955)
Connection: Solidified Iron Curtain, The ‘Long Peace’ (prevented WW3 through policy of Massive Retaliation/ brinkmanship)

COMECON
Definition: Council for Mutual Economic Assistance. A Soviet-led economic alliance formed in 1949 to facilitate trade and coordinate economic development among Communist bloc countries
Consequences: Massive Economic Divide. Forced Industrialization. Systematic Stagnation.
Connection: Countered Marshall Plan. Massive Economic System struggles lead to Hungarian Uprising 1956.

Warsaw Pact
Definition: Soviet-led mutual defense treaty and military alliance formed during the Cold War to counter NATO. 1955-91.
Consequences: Solidification of Eastern Bloc, Suppression of Political Freedoms
Connection: Iron Curtain, Ideological Standoff

Containment
Definition: United States foreign policy, initiated in 1947, aimed at stopping the spread of Soviet communist influence and preventing its expansion into new nations, largely to avoid a "domino effect"
Consequences: Lots of Proxy Wars (Vietnam), Economic Aid → Militarization,
Connection: Truman Doctrine (1947) in Greece/Turkey, Opposite was Detente

HUAC
Definition: House Un-American Activities Committee. US House of Representatives committee (1938–1975) that investigated alleged disloyalty and communist ties among private citizens, public employees, and organizations.
Consequences: Tool of the Red Scare, targeting Hollywood and government employees, Hollywood Blacklist
Connection: Normalized Anti-Communist ideology, and buzz word communism.
Hollywood 10
Definition: a group of film professionals (screenwriters, directors) cited for contempt of Congress in 1947 for refusing to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) regarding alleged Communist Party ties.
Consequences: 6-12 months in Federal Prison, Created conditions for suppression and forced compliance in the 1950’s and early 1960’s
