Connective Tissue
Most abundant and widely distributed tissue type in the body.
Mesenchyme
Common embryonic origin of connective tissues.
Fibroblast
A cellular descendant that produces connective tissue proper.
Osteoblast
A cell responsible for the formation of bone tissue.
Adipose Tissue
A type of loose connective tissue that stores fat.
Cartilage
A type of connective tissue that provides support and flexibility.
Extracellular Matrix
The nonliving substance that separates cells in connective tissues.
Collagen Fibers
Strongest and most abundant type of fibers found in connective tissue.
Hyaline Cartilage
A type of cartilage with a glassy appearance that supports and reinforces structures.
Elastic Cartilage
Cartilage containing many elastic fibers; allows great flexibility.
Fibrocartilage
A tough type of cartilage that absorbs compressive shock.
Skeletal Muscle
Striated voluntary muscle that moves bones.
Cardiac Muscle
Involuntary striated muscle found in the heart.
Smooth Muscle
Involuntary muscle that propels substances along internal passages.
Nervous Tissue
Tissue that transmits electrical signals in the body.
Epithelial Membrane
A combination of epithelium and connective tissue that covers body surfaces.
Synovial Membrane
A connective tissue membrane that lines joints.
Inflammation
The body's response to injury characterized by redness, heat, swelling, and pain.
Granulation Tissue
New tissue that forms during the healing process.
Fibrosis
The thickening and scarring of connective tissue.
