Spreadsheet
an electronic file consisting of a grid of columns and
rows that:
• Organizes related data
• Displays results of calculations
• Enables interpretation of quantitative data for decision making
Worksheet
spreadsheet containing:
• Descriptive labels
• Numeric values
• Formulas
• Functions
• Charts and other representations of data
Sheet tab
A label that resembles a file folder tab, located between the bottom
of the worksheet and the status bar, that displays the name of a
worksheet contained in the workbook. When you create a new Excel
workbook, the default worksheet is named Sheet1.
New sheet
Used to insert a new worksheet to the right of the current worksheet.
Sheet tab scroll controls
Used to scroll through sheet tabs; not all the sheet tabs are displayed at the same time. Use the scroll control to scroll left and right through sheets to the left.
View controls
Control how a worksheet displays. Normal view, the default, displays the worksheet without margins, headers, footers, and page breaks. Page Layout view displays margins, header and footer area, and a ruler. Page Break Preview displays page breaks within the worksheet.
Worksheet

Column heading
a letter displayed above a column to
identify that column in a worksheet
• Displayed in alphabetical order
• Starting from A to Z, continuing from AA to AZ, and
then from BA to BZ until XFD
Row heading
a number displayed to the left of a row to
identify that row
• Displayed in sequential order
• Starting with 1 and ending with 1,048,576
Cell
intersection of a column and a row
Cell address
identified by a column letter and then a row number
Active cell
current cell that has a dark green border around it
Name Box
displays the cell address of the active cell, selected chart, or selected table
Formula Bar
displays the contents (text, value, date, formula, or function) stored in the active cell
Text
a combination of letters, numbers, symbols, and
spaces not used in calculations
• To enter a numeric value as text, type an apostrophe
Auto Complete
searches for and automatically displays any other matching text
Semi-selection
process of selecting a cell or range of cells for
entering cell references as you create formulas
o Often called pointing because the pointer is used to select cells
when building a formula
Column width
horizontal measurement of a column in a
worksheet (between 0 and 255 characters)
If a column is too narrow for text, the text displays as if it is cut off
Range
a group of adjacent or contiguous cells in a
worksheet.
• A colon is used to define a range, e.g., A7:H7
Cell style
a collection of format characteristics that provides a consistent appearance

• Font color and size

• Alignment
• Number formatting
Alignment
indicates how data are positioned in the
boundaries of a cell
• Horizontal alignment: specifies the position of data
between the left and right cell margins
• Vertical alignment: specifies the position of data
between the top and bottom cell margins
• Wrap text: word-wraps data on multiple lines within a
cell
General
The default number format.
Number
A number with or without the comma separator and with any
number of decimal places. Negative numbers can be displayed
with parentheses and/or red.
Currency Format
A number, the dollar sign immediately to the left of the number, a
comma for every three digits on the left side of the decimal point,
and two digits to the right of the decimal point. Negative values
are preceded by a minus sign. Zero displays as $0.00.
Accounting Number Format
A number, the dollar sign on the left side of the cell, a comma for
every three digits on the left side of the decimal point, and two
digits to the right of the decimal point. Negative values are
enclosed in parentheses by default. Zero displays as a dollar sign
and a hyphen.
Comma Style
A number formatted with a comma for every three digits on the
left side of the decimal point and displays two digits to the right of
the decimal point.
Date
A serial number formatted as a date.
Time
A number formatted for time.
Percent Style
A value formatted as if it was multiplied by 100 and with a percent
symbol.
Fraction
A number formatted as a fraction.
Scientific
A number as a decimal fraction followed by a whole number
exponent of 10; for example, the number 12345 would display as
1.23E+04.
Text Treats data as text, even if it contains numbers.
Special
A number with editing characters, such as the parentheses and
hyphen in a phone number, hyphen in a Zip Code+4, and the
hyphens in a Social Security number.

create your own customized number format
