Total War
A type of warfare where all parts of society are mobilized to contribute to the war effort.
Treaty of Versailles
The most famous peace treaty that concluded World War I, imposing heavy reparations and territorial losses on Germany.
Lost Generation
A term used to describe those who came of age during World War I, often characterized by disillusionment with traditional values.
Militarism
The buildup of military power and reliance on military force as a primary tool of diplomacy.
Nationalism
An intense pride in one’s nation which can lead to unity or division among diverse populations.
Triple Entente
The alliance comprised of France, Russia, and Britain during World War I.
Triple Alliance
The alliance formed by Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy prior to World War I.
Ethnic Nationalism
The desire of ethnic groups to achieve independence and self-determination, often leading to conflict.
Dreadnoughts
A class of battleship introduced by Britain that significantly changed naval warfare.
Propaganda
Information, often biased or misleading, promoted to influence public opinion during the war.
Brest-Litovsk Treaty
The treaty through which Russia exited World War I, ceding territory to Germany.
Legacies of World War I
The long-term impacts including unresolved tensions, economic hardship, and the rise of nationalism that contributed to WWII.
