Dynamic Approach
a child is born with a certain amount of sexual energy referred to as the libido . This libido biologically is guided to certain locations of the body. and the locations are referred to as erogenous zones and the zones are oral, anal, and the genital areas
the sexual energy refers to the ability to experience sexual pleasure . The arrival of the libido in each zone marks a new stage in the child's psycho sexual development
Structural Approach
includes the Id, ego and the superego
Id
dark, mysterious part of one's personality.
seat of innate desires and the main source of sexual energy
wants immediate gratifications
operates throughout our day dreams, night dreams and our imagination as well as in our impulsive, selfish and pleasure seeking behaviors
the Id has been called
the spoiled child of our personality
Ego
minds avenue to the real world
required for physical and psychological survival
activities include perception, logical thought, problem solving, and memory
decisions are aided by feelings of anxiety

Repression
denying or forgetting danger
Reaction formation
acting the opposite from the way one truly feels
Projection
attributing one's unacceptable behavior to others
Regression
returning to an earlier form of behavior
Fixation
remaining at the present level of cognitive development
Sublimation
substituting a desired object/person for less desirable object/ person
Compensation
making up for failure in one area by applying oneself in another area
identification
adopting a characteristics of an aggressor to make up for one's inadequacy
Displacement
retaliating against someone other than the one whom retaliation is desired
Superego
last structure to develop and occurs when children resolve the oedipus complex and develop identification for the same sex parent.
2 parts: conscience and ego ideal
Conscience part
negative and punishes the child with feelings of guilt
Ego Ideal Part
positive and refers to standards of conduct towards to which the child strives
Freud states
the ego ideal rewards the child with feelings of positive self esteem and pride the superego opposes both the Id and the Ego
id, superego, and ego are
intertwined
Geographic Approach
includes 3 regions: unconscious, preconscious, conscious
these 3 regions operate together in Holistic manner to produce behavior
unconscious
thoughts and feelings that are repressed and unknown. Id resides in the unconscious
Preconscious
it's thoughts become conscious by forming mental images or linking words to form language
conscious
what a person is aware of at any given moment also referred to as perceptual conscious
Psycho analytic methods approach
his methodology encompasses 1. free association, 2. dream analysis and 3. transference
free association
that the a subject will orally reports his/her ongoing stream of thought
dream analysis
focuses on a subjects verbal reports of only his mental activities
transference
occurs when a subject/patient has positive and/or negative feelings for their psycho therapist
