they can stifle genuine worship, too structured

Adoration - Praising God for what he is

18
New cards

why is it important to pray

having this personal relationship with God can provide comfort to Christians

  • believe God is listening

  • believe he may send a signal back

19
New cards

Explain 2 contrasting examples of Christian worship

  • One example of Christian worship is liturgical worship this usually follows a set order/ pattern with a structure to the service and example of this is RCC who perform Mass

  • Another example is informal worship, this is usually seen as more charismatic as it often features hymns, sermons, readings etc with a freer style and a more relaxed and lively vibe and example of a denomination that follows this is Evangelicalism

20
New cards

2 agree points - ā€˜The Lord’s prayer is the only prayer Christians need to use’

  • It contains all components of prayer (ACTS) for example when it says ā€œhallowed be thy nameā€œ it is an example of adoration or ā€œforgive us our sinsā€œ is an example of confession

  • This is the prayer that Jesus tells his followers to use, we know Jesus is divine and therefore perfect meaning this must be a perfect prayer (ā€œwhen you pray say:ā€œ Luke 11)

  • It encourages Christians to forgive others and treat them with kindness which we know is a key belief (ā€œAs we forgive them that trespass against usā€œ)

  • Universally applicable to everyone and all denominations and shows God’s love is for everyone, important because we are all ā€œimago deiā€œ

21
New cards

2 disagree points - ā€˜The Lord’s prayer is the only prayer Christians need to use’

  • Other forms of prayer can also be used. e.g. informal prayer may be silent and have personal reflection

  • prayer is personal so it can be done in any way, Jesus used different forms of prayer

  • It can be seen as less heartfelt and meaningful to only use 1 prayer, evangelical denomination ( informal ) say it can become ā€œvain repetitionā€œ

  • Only prayers to the father those who believe in trinity may find it insufficient and want to use other prayers such as apostles creed which also says ā€œand in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord... I believe in the Holy Spirit...".

  • God cares more about the meaning behind the words rather than the authority or exact words

any act that shows devotion or love for God

35
New cards

2 agree points - ā€˜Liturgical worship is more important than non-liturgicalā€˜

  • RRC will say yes - Mass is a form of liturgical worship and is very important as Christians receive the body and blood of Christ

  • Bible readings and sermons provide an opportunity to learn more about the faith

  • Unites Christians as it is a worldwide set that is familiar to all

36
New cards

2 disagree points - ā€˜Liturgical worship is more important than non-liturgicalā€˜

  • Non-liturgical worship could be seen as having more meaning as its less scripted, bigger emotional impact so they can connect to God on a deeper more personal level

  • More inclusive, anyone can participate and have an active role, for Baptists there is no set leader

37
New cards

2 agree points - ā€˜Public worship is more important than private worshipā€˜

  • Public worship is unlikely to become selfish as you are following set prayers that follow ACTS

  • Jesus shows us the importance of public worship in the last supper

  • God is present in public worship ā€œFor where two or three gather in my name, there i am with themā€œ - brings a community together

  • opportunity to receive the sacraments and thus become closer to God and obtain salvation

38
New cards

2 disagree points - ā€˜Public worship is more important than private worshipā€˜

  • You can praise God and ask for specific things, more meaningful

  • connect to God on a more personal level and thus show more love to him ā€œlove the lord with all your heart and all your soulā€œ

  • Jesus often prayed alone in the Garden of Gethsemane, told his disciples to do them same as God is immanent and will see their worship

  • After the pandemic the importance of private worship was shown

  • ā€œclose the door and pray to your fatherā€œ - prayer is not about attention

  • ā€œWhatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received itā€œ - God will always be there when you pray no matter what type of prayer it

explain 2 points about infant baptism

  • It means the child can recieve the other sacraments as soon as possible, and become closer to God and form a deeper more personal connection

  • Can be a comfort to parents to know that their ill child is part of the community before death

  • parents reject evil for the child and promise to bring the child up in Christian form

  • In line with Christian traditions as it has been done for hundreds of years

45
New cards

explain 2 points about believers baptism
