transference
is when a client projects feelings or expectations from past relationships onto the therapist, often unconsciously.
example: if they often felt criticized by parent, they might feel critiqued by the therapist even if they are neutral
Countertransferece
The therapist unconsciously reacts to a client based on their own past experiences or feelings.
It’s the therapist’s emotions, not the client’s behavior, causing the reaction.
Can be positive or negative.
Therapists use it to understand the client, but must avoid letting personal feelings take over.
