transference

is when a client projects feelings or expectations from past relationships onto the therapist, often unconsciously.

example: if they often felt criticized by parent, they might feel critiqued by the therapist even if they are neutral

Countertransferece

  • The therapist unconsciously reacts to a client based on their own past experiences or feelings.

  • It’s the therapist’s emotions, not the client’s behavior, causing the reaction.

  • Can be positive or negative.

  • Therapists use it to understand the client, but must avoid letting personal feelings take over.
