Attachment Theory
The idea that humans can develop a secure emotional bond with animals.
In Prison: PAPs provide a rare opportunity for prisoners to experience affection, love, and comfort in an environment where social bonds are otherwise fractured.
Biophilia Hypothesis
The innate tendency of humans to seek connections with nature and other forms of life.
In Prison: Engaging with animals allows incarcerated individuals to connect with "outside life" and the natural world, which is typically restricted
The Oxytocin Effect
Mechanism: Interaction with animals triggers the release of oxytocin in the brain.
Benefit: This biological response directly helps in reducing stress, anxiety, and blood pressure among participants.
Animal-Assisted Intervention (AAI)
Definition: The utilization of various species (commonly puppies or cats) in diverse manners beneficial to human socialization and health.
Application: While common in hospitals and airports, it is increasingly applied in carceral settings to provide emotional support and skill-building.
Service Dog Training Programs
Activity: Prisoners work on obedience training for dogs destined to become service animals.
Skill Development: Participants practice patience, problem-solving, and calmness. It shifts the focus from their own struggles to the needs of the animal.
The Role of Non-Verbal Communication
Key Insight: Conversations between humans in prison can "go bad" due to judgment or bullying.
Advantage: Animals provide a non-judgmental, non-verbal connection, allowing for a "safe" emotional interaction that lacks the social risks of inmate-to-inmate communication.
The "Happy Hounds" Results
Primary Findings: Participants reported that love and support were the most paramount aspects of the program.
Emotional Impact: Research showed a significant rise in positive emotions, a reduction in stress, and a feeling of "alleviation" from the prison environment.
Contribution to Correctional Plans
Concept: How PAPs align with rehabilitation goals.
Key takeaway: Beyond emotional support, these programs help prisoners work on patience and following rules, which are essential components of their formal correctional plans.
Symbolic Anchors (Pictures and Plushies)
Method: Providing participants with photos of the dogs or stuffed plushies upon graduation.
Purpose: These items help maintain the bond after the program ends and serve as a tool for reflection on the skills (like patience) the prisoner worked on during the intervention.
