Types of Irony

Dramatic irony

When the audience or reader knows more about the events than the characters do.

Situational irony

When the opposite of what is expected actually happens.

Cosmic Irony

The idea that fate, the universe, or the gods are deliberately toying with humans, causing their desires to backfire.

Verbal irony

When a character says something but means the opposite.

Socratic Irony

A method of arguing where a speaker feigns ignorance to draw out the weaknesses in an opponent's argument
