Storm water
Rain water.
Plumbarius
An individual who worked in the sanitary field of ancient Rome.
Common vent
A drain from two or three fixtures connected to a single trap.
Solid waste
Waste discharge by a water closet.
Main sewer
A sewer line or system directly controlled by public authority.
Back pressure
Air pressure in drainage pipes greater than atmospheric pressure.
Maximum demand
The maximum water discharge of fixtures in terms of fixture units.
Minimum drain size serving a water closet
A minimum of 3in for any drain, horizontal branch, or vertical soil stack serving one or more water closets.
Low pressure gas piping air test
A test of at least 10psi for 15minutes, or sufficient to balance a column of mercury 254mm in height.
Friction
The resistance produced by flowing water with fittings and the interior surface of the pipe.
Water supply system test pressure
150% of used water pressure.
Normal pressure
The pressure range measured over a period of 24hours.
Flush tank supply minimum pressure
A minimum of 8.0psi should be maintained for fixtures containing flush tank supplies.
Water meter
A device used to measure the amount of water that passes through the water service.
Building drain
The lowest piping system that receives the discharge from soil, waste, and other drainage pipes.
Plumbing Code
A set of regulations adopted by an administrative agency that has jurisdiction over material and design specifications in plumbing.
Corporation stop
A control inserted into the water main that serves as the control of the water service.
Pump circuit system
A mechanical device used to circulate hot water to the plumbing system.
Foot valve
A valve located at the lower end of a pump used to prevent loss of priming.
Globe valve
A valve actuated by a stem screw and hand wheel, suited for installations that call for throttling.
Stand pipe
A vertical pipe usually used for the storage of water, frequently under pressure.
Lavatory
A bowl or basin used for washing the face and hands, sometimes called a washbasin.
Wet pipe
A piping installation where both the mains and the distribution pipes are constantly filled with water.
Sovent system components
Aeration (used as a terminal of the soil branch on each floor) and Deaeration (installed at the bottom portion of the soil stack).
Fixture unit (Liters)
One fixture unit represents 30liters of water.
Piping support interval
Support or anchorage of piping shall not exceed an interval of 10ft, though plastic pipe specifically requires support at every 1meter interval.
Ejector
An electrically or mechanically operated device used to elevate sewage and liquid waste from a lower level to a point of discharge.
Reynolds number
The measure of inertia forces to viscous forces, describing whether flow is turbulent or laminar.
Continuous vent
A vertical vent that is a continuation of the drain to which it connects.
Plumbing Law of the Philippines
RA 1378, signed by President Ramon Magsaysay on June 18, 1955.
NAMPAP
National Master Plumbing Association of the Philippines, organized and registered with the SEC in 1935.
AVB
Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker, a backflow prevention device.
Caulking
Plugging an opening with oakum, lead, or other materials that are pounded into the annular space.
Lateral
In plumbing, a secondary pipeline; in sewage, a common sewer receiving sewage from building sewer service connections only with no other branch sewer connected.
Invert
The lowest portion of the interior part of any pipe or conduit that is not vertical.
Privy
An outhouse or structure used for the deposition of excrement.
PD 856
The Code of Sanitation of the Philippines with Implementing Rules and Regulations.
Soldering
A pipe joint obtained by joining metal parts with metallic mixtures which melt at a temperature below 427∘C and above 149∘C.
Rough piping inspection
The inspection of a gas piping system prior to covering or concealing such pipe.
Flashing
A piece of metal fitted under another piece of metal or wood over which water is expected to run.
Bushing
A pipe fitting used to reduce the size of an opening.
Septic tank clearance (water supply)
A septic tank should be at least 15meters away from any source of water supply wells.
Durham System
A soil or waste system where all piping is threaded pipe, tubing, or other rigid construction using recessed drainage fittings.
Receptor
An approved plumbing fixture or device of such materials, shape, and capacity to adequately receive the discharge from indirect waste pipes.
Pollution
An impairment of the quality of the water to a degree which creates a hazard to public health and adversely affects aesthetic and potable qualities.
