Sensory Memory
The initial, brief stage of memory that holds incoming sensory information for a few seconds or less.
Short-Term Memory
A temporary storage system that holds a limited amount of information for a short duration, usually around 15-30 seconds.
Working Memory
An active form of short-term memory that processes and manipulates information for current use.
Long-Term Memory
A memory system with virtually unlimited capacity and duration, where information can be stored indefinitely.
Autobiographical Memory
A type of long-term memory related to personal experiences and life history.
Maintenance Rehearsal
A method of keeping information in short-term memory by repeating it without adding meaning.
Elaborative Rehearsal
A strategy for transferring information to long-term memory by connecting it to existing knowledge or adding meaning.
Amnesia
A condition characterized by memory loss.
Retrograde Amnesia
Memory loss for events that occurred before the onset of amnesia.
Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory (HSAM)
A rare condition in which individuals can recall an extraordinary amount of detail about their personal life events.
Anterograde Amnesia
The inability to form new long-term memories after the onset of amnesia.
Alzheimer's Disease
A degenerative brain disorder that leads to progressive memory loss and cognitive decline.
Infantile Amnesia
The inability of most people to recall memories from early childhood, typically before the age of three.
