1) describe the major functions of the urinary system and how it work alongside at least three other body systems to accomplish these functions

  • the urinary system’s major functions are to filter and regulate blood, sends toxins and waste to the urine and retains any nutrients the body needs and emptying out the bladder removes toxins from the body and maintains homeostasis with water volume which also contributes with our blood pressure.

  • kidneys are the mvp of the urinary system, regulating many functions concentration of bodily fluids. ureters transport urine from the kidneys to the bladder. the bladder is a hollow and smooth muscular sac that carries urine temporarily

2) defend the claim that the kidneys are the most critical organ in the urinary system

the kidneys regulate the excretion of foreign substances from the body, RBC production, blood pressure, regulate water volume in the body and osmolality, ion concentrations, acid base balance, can also convert amino acids that are left over into carbs or lipids so that it can be stored. nitrogen comes from amino acids which is converted in ammonia and then urea which is then released outside of the body through urinating.

3) differentiate between the roles of the renal arteries and renal veins in the kidneys

renal arteries deliver deoxygenated blood from the heart to the kidney. renal veins delivers deoxygenated blood out of the kidneys to the inferior vena cava.

4) explain the importance of nephrons

the are the functional and structural units of the kidneys (especially microscopic filtering units where blood is processed). there are two main parts, the renal corpuscle (located in the renal cortex) and the renal tubules. the renal corpuscle consists of the glomerulus (tons of capillaries) and surrounded by the glomerulus capsule. the renal tubules start in the renal cortex and pass into the renal medulla.

5) summarize the process of how nephrons filter blood in order to make urine, including where each step occurs
